lately i’ve been dreaming of home
by Yitzel Serna
i know i’ve been away for far too long
but i’ve been meaning to tell you
that lately
i've been dreaming of home.
when the darkness sets outside my window
and the birds are quiet
a gentle breeze stirs behind my sight
since lately i’ve been dreaming of home.
and maybe it’s the wintertime that has stirred my longing
the cold that distorts all sense of belonging
until you can’t tell what’s up or what down,
until you’re surrounded by bare sticks of winter trees
and seas of roots pulled above ground
nothing seems as safe or as sound
but lately i’ve been dreaming of home.
i think of it fondly
i promise you i’ll try
the greens of the rolling hills and the blue oceanside
the smells of summer that brings everything to life
i can’t find it here below the thick ice
a dense fog has obscured everything in sight
and although i can’t seem to find the light
i know that the sun will once again rise
and i know that you’ll be waiting on the other side
but in the meantime
i ask that you wait for me to arrive
because lately i’ve been dreaming of home.
